Ritchelly Oliveira
Ritchelly Oliveira is a Brazilian visual artist born in 1993. He studied Visual Arts at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG) and began developing his professional practice in 2012. From the outset, the human figure became the principal vehicle for his reflections on affection, love, family, memory and emotional wounds. His work has been exhibited in Brazil, the United States and Europe, with projects including the solo exhibition Fragility at La Brea Studio in Los Angeles in 2023, as well as earlier group presentations in Goiânia, Berlin, Miami and New York. His work has also appeared in international publications including Beautiful Bizarre Magazine and other art and culture magazines.
Oliveira’s highly refined figurative language can appear almost photographic, yet the purpose of the realism is emotional rather than purely technical. Portraits function as spaces in which presence and absence, fear, desire, suffering, love and memory can be examined. The artist has described his practice as an ongoing continuity rather than a sequence of unrelated works. His series Lacunas (Gaps), begun in 2015, invited people to discuss past relationships and their understanding of love, reinforcing dialogue and listening as part of his image-making process. Recurring birds act as allegorical signs of emotional wounds, while unfinished areas and black-and-white passages deliberately leave space for the viewer’s own projections. His practice also intersects with themes of mental health, psychoanalysis, identity and the long-term effects of formative experiences.
