In Hold on II, a shirtless young man turns his body and raises his arms, one hand catching a bird while other dark birds beat their wings around his torso and shoulder. The figure is drawn in black and grey against a flat, saturated yellow ground.
The gesture sits between holding on and letting go, a tension that runs through Ritchelly Oliveira’s practice. The birds, which the artist describes as allegorical signs of emotional wounds, are caught mid-movement, while the musculature and skin are modelled in charcoal with near-photographic control.
Unique work, charcoal and acrylic on canvas, 100 × 70 cm (39.4 × 27.6 in). Born in Brazil in 1993 and trained in Visual Arts at the Federal University of Goiás, Ritchelly Oliveira has worked with the human figure since 2012. His work has been exhibited in Goiânia, Berlin, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, including the solo exhibition Fragility at La Brea Studio in 2023, and has appeared in international art publications such as Beautiful Bizarre.
