Mar Azul (Blue Sea) brings two women together in a close, layered composition: one leans over the other’s shoulder while both look out of the picture. Their skin is rendered in deep blue tones that stand out sharply against a flat, saturated orange ground.

Ritchelly Oliveira often sets a drawn figure against an uninflected field of colour, lifting it out of any specific setting. In this work the complementary blue and orange give the double portrait a strong graphic presence, while the charcoal modelling of faces, hair and shoulders keeps the precision of his drawing.

Unique work, charcoal and acrylic on canvas, 100 × 70 cm (39.4 × 27.6 in). Born in Brazil in 1993 and trained in Visual Arts at the Federal University of Goiás, Ritchelly Oliveira has worked with the human figure since 2012. His subject is affection and what it leaves behind, explored through portraits built in dialogue with his sitters. His work has been exhibited in Goiânia, Berlin, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, including the solo exhibition Fragility at La Brea Studio in 2023, and has appeared in international art publications such as Beautiful Bizarre.
