Pássaro Azul (Blue Bird) shows a woman with her head lifted and her gaze lowered, while a white bird with fully spread wings passes across her throat. The figure is set against a pale, cool blue ground that gives the work its title.
Ritchelly Oliveira builds the face in charcoal to near-photographic finish, then lets the shoulders and lower body dissolve into the canvas. Birds recur throughout his practice, and the artist describes them as allegorical signs of emotional wounds; placed at the throat, this one reads at once as an embrace and as a constraint.
Charcoal and acrylic on canvas, 80 × 60 cm (31.5 × 23.6 in). Born in Brazil in 1993 and trained in Visual Arts at the Federal University of Goiás, Ritchelly Oliveira has worked with the human figure since 2012. His work has been exhibited in Goiânia, Berlin, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, including the solo exhibition Fragility at La Brea Studio in 2023, and has appeared in international art publications such as Beautiful Bizarre.
