As cartas que escrevo (The Letters I Write) is a tondo in which a woman looks out from the centre of a circle while white doves fly across her face, shoulders and chest. The figure is set against a warm terracotta ground and presented in a round black frame.
The doves, a constant in Ritchelly Oliveira’s work, are drawn feather by feather in charcoal, while the face is built in deep blacks and soft highlights. The artist describes the birds as allegorical signs of emotional wounds; here they read like messages in flight, in keeping with the title.
Unique work, charcoal and acrylic on canvas, 100 × 100 cm (39.4 × 39.4 in). Circular formats are rare and suit walls where a rectangle would not sit well. Born in Brazil in 1993 and trained in Visual Arts at the Federal University of Goiás, Ritchelly Oliveira has worked with the human figure since 2012. His work has been exhibited in Goiânia, Berlin, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, including the solo exhibition Fragility at La Brea Studio in 2023, and has appeared in international art publications such as Beautiful Bizarre.
