Coroação (Coronation) shows a woman in profile, eyes closed and chin raised, as a flock of white doves takes flight around her head and forms a crown of wings. The figure emerges from a deep black ground, lit only along the line of her face and neck.
Doves recur throughout Ritchelly Oliveira’s practice, and the artist describes them as allegorical signs of emotional wounds. Gathered above the head, they become here a form of crowning, at once a blessing and a weight. The birds are drawn feather by feather in charcoal, in strong contrast with the darkness around them.
Unique work, charcoal and acrylic on canvas, 100 × 60 cm (39.4 × 23.6 in), and one of the artist’s most recent works. Born in Brazil in 1993 and trained in Visual Arts at the Federal University of Goiás, Ritchelly Oliveira has worked with the human figure since 2012. His work has been exhibited in Goiânia, Berlin, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, including the solo exhibition Fragility at La Brea Studio in 2023, and has appeared in international art publications such as Beautiful Bizarre.
