Semente (Seed) shows a woman with voluminous hair wrapping her arms around herself while roses and peonies grow over her body and close in around her. The whole composition is drawn in black and white.
In Ritchelly Oliveira’s garden works, flowers hold a figure and obscure it at once. Here the self-embrace and the enveloping blossoms suggest protection and germination, in keeping with the title. Every petal is resolved in charcoal, while the dark spaces between them give the image its depth.
Unique work, charcoal and acrylic on canvas, 120 × 90 cm (47.2 × 35.4 in). Born in Brazil in 1993 and trained in Visual Arts at the Federal University of Goiás, Ritchelly Oliveira has worked with the human figure since 2012.
