In The girl in the feather canyons, a young woman looks directly out of the picture, one hand pressed to her chest, while white doves wheel around her head and shoulders like walls of feathers. Her face is the only warm-toned element in an otherwise white and grey composition.

The doves are a constant in Ritchelly Oliveira’s work, often placed at the throat or across the face, and the artist describes them as allegorical signs of emotional wounds. Here they both shelter and crowd the sitter. The feathers are drawn in charcoal with great precision, while the edges of the canvas are left open and bright.

Unique work, charcoal and acrylic on canvas, 97 × 78 cm (38.2 × 30.7 in). Born in Brazil in 1993 and trained in Visual Arts at the Federal University of Goiás, Ritchelly Oliveira has worked with the human figure since 2012. His work has been exhibited in Goiânia, Berlin, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, including the solo exhibition Fragility at La Brea Studio in 2023, and has appeared in international art publications such as Beautiful Bizarre.
