Feel the Blue III

In Feel the Blue III, a woman raises both hands to hold a dark bird balanced on top of her head, looking straight out of the picture. Her skin is rendered in deep blue tones against a flat, bright orange ground.

The work belongs to Ritchelly Oliveira’s series of portraits set against strong complementary colour. The bird, a recurring presence in his practice, is held rather than flying away, and the raised arms frame the face with a sculptural clarity. Charcoal gives the figure its volume and detail, while acrylic provides the vivid ground.

Unique work, charcoal and acrylic on canvas, 100 × 80 cm (39.4 × 31.5 in). Born in Brazil in 1993 and trained in Visual Arts at the Federal University of Goiás, Ritchelly Oliveira has worked with the human figure since 2012. His work has been exhibited in Goiânia, Berlin, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, including the solo exhibition Fragility at La Brea Studio in 2023, and has appeared in international art publications such as Beautiful Bizarre.
