Jardim dos Sonhos

Jardim dos Sonhos (Garden of Dreams) is one of Ritchelly Oliveira’s garden works. A woman with closed eyes tips her head back as white and pink peonies and roses accumulate around her face, until it becomes unclear whether the flowers are holding her, hiding her or slowly taking her in. Her pale shirt is embroidered with blossoms that echo the garden above.

Here Oliveira pairs charcoal with oil paint: the face is drawn in charcoal tones with a precision often taken for photography, while the flowers are painted in soft colour against a deep, dark ground. The contrast between the resolved skin and the loosely built garden is characteristic of a practice in which unfinished passages are deliberate.

Unique work, charcoal and oil on canvas, 90 × 67 cm (35.4 × 26.4 in). Born in Brazil in 1993 and trained in Visual Arts at the Federal University of Goiás, Ritchelly Oliveira has worked with the human figure since 2012. His work has been exhibited in Goiânia, Berlin, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, including the solo exhibition Fragility at La Brea Studio in 2023, and has appeared in international art publications such as Beautiful Bizarre.
