Seen, 2020 is an original spray on canvas by Richard Mirando, known internationally as SEEN, the graffiti writer.
Measuring 176 centimetres wide by 66 centimetres high, this horizontal canvas directly quotes the elongated silhouette of a New York City subway carriage—the exact surface for which this visual typography was created. While the writer’s tag represents speed, the bubble lettering featured here represents design: a single iconic name slowed down, rounded out, outlined, and filled with spray paint directly on studio canvas.
Born in the Bronx in 1961, SEEN began painting subway trains in 1973 at twelve years old, quickly becoming a defining figure of the United Artists crew. His historical position is documented as a matter of published record in Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant’s Subway Art and the seminal 1983 film Style Wars.
