SEEN is the artist name of Richard Mirando, an American graffiti pioneer born in the Bronx in 1961. He began painting New York City subway trains in 1973, at around twelve years old, and became closely associated with the United Artists (UA) crew. Over the following years he developed a highly recognizable language of vibrant block and wildstyle lettering, whole-car compositions and cartoon imagery. By the early 1980s, he had begun transferring his visual language to canvas and exhibiting internationally, including in contexts that also featured artists such as Keith Haring, Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. His work also entered tattooing, clothing and other media, and he opened the successful Tattoo Seen studio in New York.

SEEN’s major visual signatures include bold letterforms, bubble lettering, intense colour and figures drawn from comic books and television cartoons. Characters such as superheroes and animated figures became recurring motifs alongside his name and tags. His career bridges the historical subway-graffiti era and the institutional/market space of contemporary urban art. Later works expand into three-dimensional sculpture, mixed media using reclaimed or discarded materials, and hand-painted limited-edition New York subway maps. His work is documented in key graffiti histories such as Subway Art and in the film Style Wars, giving it both artistic and archival significance within the history of New York graffiti.
