NYC Street Splash, 2021 is an original spray on canvas by Richard Mirando, known internationally as SEEN, the graffiti writer.
Rather than treating the wall alone as the surface, this composition places the instrument itself at the center of the frame. In this slender vertical composition, an aerosol spray can is rendered with meticulous highlights against a constructed ground of brickwork, paint splatter, and stencilled “NYC 1980” lettering. Across the entire canvas runs SEEN’s fluid black tag, applied in a single rapid pass at the speed of authentic transit writing.
The core tension of the work resides in the contrast between the deliberate, hours-long construction of the background and the decisive two-second signature that crowns it. Born in the Bronx in 1961 and active on New York subway trains since 1973, SEEN’s foundational legacy is recorded in landmark archives including Subway Art and the film Style Wars.
