Toy Room constructs an elaborate, dreamlike interior populated by figures and objects that seem to have escaped from different layers of childhood and popular culture. At its centre, a pale, doll-like girl sits inside an ornate toy-theatre structure, surrounded by transformed companions, oversized alphabet blocks and a vaulted architecture rendered in warm ochres. The scene follows the logic of a remembered playroom rebuilt by the subconscious: scales shift, references collide and the familiar becomes strange.
Lukschal’s figurative precision makes every element legible, while surreal juxtapositions keep the painting from settling into a single story. Nods to contemporary art and art history (a balloon dog, a KAWS-like companion, a Calder-style mobile, a Dalí poster) accumulate like fragments of memory rather than quotations. The near-square format turns the canvas into a self-contained stage, and its palette of gold, turquoise, burgundy and muted blue supports, rather than softens, its psychological ambiguity.
A unique acrylic on canvas measuring 96.5 × 93 cm, Toy Room has the presence to anchor a living room, office or collector’s wall, and rewards close, repeated viewing.
