Estudo sobre tela I

Estudo sobre tela I (Study on Canvas I) reduces a portrait to its edge: the head and shoulders of a figure drawn in near-total black, with only the whites of the eyes, an earring and the faint line of the features catching the light, set against a vivid pink-red ground.

Here, Ritchelly Oliveira places a monochrome figure against an uninflected field of saturated colour, lifting it out of any setting. The detail lives in the darkest values of the charcoal and reveals itself slowly as the eye adjusts.

Unique work, charcoal and acrylic on canvas, 120 × 90 cm (47.2 × 35.4 in). Born in Brazil in 1993 and trained in Visual Arts at the Federal University of Goiás, Ritchelly Oliveira has worked with the human figure since 2012. His work has been exhibited in Goiânia, Berlin, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, including the solo exhibition Fragility at La Brea Studio in 2023, and has appeared in international art publications such as Beautiful Bizarre.
