Teddy Bear is an original contemporary sculpture by Valay Shende, a prominent figure in Indian contemporary art known for his meticulous and highly physical fabrication methods.

The sculpture is assembled from thousands of small stainless steel circles, each cut and welded one by one. This deliberately laborious technique accumulates into a granular, reflective surface that reads as a continuous body from across the room, yet dissolves into countless identical industrial units when viewed up close.

By applying this method to the form of a classic soft toy, Shende creates a striking collision of subject and material. The familiar, comforting proportions of a childhood bear are rendered in heavy, unyielding steel. This profound contrast embodies the artist’s ongoing commentary on labor, migration, and the pressures of contemporary urban systems, resulting in an object that anchors a room with undeniable presence and weight.
