Toy Art is a compact bronze sculpture in which Beto Gatti combines the visual codes of a collectible toy, a humanoid automaton and a primate figure. The character stands upright while staring into a smartphone, its articulated joints and oversized shoes making it appear partly manufactured rather than fully autonomous.
The polished golden bronze gives the object a seductive, almost luxury-product presence. That attraction is central to the work: the figure is playful and immediately recognisable, yet its fixed attention on the screen opens a more critical reading about absorption, connectivity and automatic behaviour. The primate-like head raises an evolutionary question, while the mechanical body suggests a reversal of progress: ever more sophisticated technology, ever more automated human gestures.
Cast in 2022 in an edition of eight, this is edition 1/8. At 35 cm high, it reads clearly from across a room and works as a focal piece on a pedestal, console or shelf.
