Shim Moon Seup painting a canvas of The Presentation series in his studio

Shim Moon Seup is a Korean sculptor and painter, born in Tongyeong on the southern coast of Korea, and a central figure of Korean avant-garde art since the late 1960s. He graduated in sculpture from Seoul National University in 1965 and, as a member of the Korean Avant-Garde (AG) movement, developed the radical notion of “anti-sculpture”: rather than a finished form, sculpture becomes the relation between material, space and time. Working with wood, stone, earth, iron, water and light, he resonated with contemporaneous currents such as Mono-ha, Arte Povera and Land Art while grounding his language in Eastern thought. He took part in the Paris Biennale in the 1970s, the São Paulo Biennial (1975), the Biennale of Sydney (1976) and exhibitions linked to the Venice Biennale (1995, 2001). In 2007, invited by the French Ministry of Culture, he became the first Korean artist to present a solo exhibition in the Jardin du Palais-Royal in Paris, the year France named him Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Since the 2000s, Shim has extended this inquiry into painting with The Presentation, a series born from the sea of Tongyeong, his hometown. Layer after layer of repeated brushstrokes evoke the endless movement of the water and an infinite cycle of creation and dissolution, so that each canvas records the time of its own making and blurs the line between sculpture and painting. The artist describes himself less as a maker than as a “condition setter”, arranging the minimal circumstances through which nature reveals its own forms. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Korea, Fondazione Mudima in Milan, Tokyo Gallery, the Yuan Art Museum in Beijing and the Gyeongnam Art Museum, and in 2026 at Ca’ Faccanon in Venice during the 61st Venice Biennale. It belongs to the collections of the MMCA, the Seoul Museum of Art, the Leeum Museum of Art, the Hakone Open-Air Museum and the Fonds national d’art contemporain (FNAC) in Paris.
