Mario Henrique
Mario Henrique is a contemporary Portuguese painter based in Cascais. After graduating in Design from the University of Fine Arts in Lisbon, he worked as a creative director in online marketing and web-development agencies, leading teams in Portugal, Spain and Brazil. Roughly a decade later, he shifted his professional focus toward contemporary painting, an interest he had maintained in parallel. His work is held in private collections across Europe, the Americas and Asia, and he has exhibited both in Portugal and abroad. Public biographies also note an Honourable Mention connected with the 2016 Brasília Biennial of Contemporary Arts.
Henrique is best known for expressive portraiture that studies the unpredictability of human behaviour, fleeting glances and the impermanence of facial expressions. He works rapidly and physically, often using unconventional supports and tools such as cardboard, reversed canvases and hardware implements. Drips, splashes and thrown paint remain visible as evidence of the making process. Chance is central to his method: although the initial gesture may be deliberate, the final distribution of paint cannot be fully controlled. His recent catalogue includes portrait-led and figurative bodies of work such as Somnium, Venus and Ballerina, alongside individual works including Obsession Is Romantic, The Blue Child and She Carries The Sea. Interviews with the artist also indicate that his inspirations can emerge from film, music, old photographs and everyday visual stimuli, while the human figure and facial expression remain his strongest recurring focus.
